主啊！懇求你塑造我的兒子，
使他能夠堅強的明白自己的軟弱，能夠勇敢的面對恐懼。
在現實的失敗中，毫不氣餒，在勝利中，仍保持謙遜溫和。
懇求您塑造我的兒子，不要光空想而不去行動。
帶領他認識你，並且知道自己是知識的基石。
我禱告，不要讓他走在安逸、舒適的道路
而是讓他經歷壓力、艱難與挑戰。
藉此讓他學習在暴風中挺立，學習憐恤失敗的人。
懇求你塑造我的兒子，使他心地純潔，目標崇高。
使他在指揮別人之前，先駕駛自己；善加籌劃未來，但永不忘記過去。
當他擁有以上的一切，我還要懇求主，
賜他足夠的幽默感，使他在認真嚴謹生活的同時，不會過分地苛求自己。
懇求您賜給他謙卑，使他永遠記得，真正偉大在於平凡！
真正智慧在於敞開的心！
真正力量在於溫和柔順！
如此，身為父親的我，才敢低聲說：「我沒有虛度此生。」
General MacArthur’s Prayer For His Son
Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee—and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take him too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “ I have not lived in vain.”
